Red Flowers on a Branch for Baterbys

I began this painting a few weeks ago and today I placed the finishing touches with india ink detailing the fine lines of the flowers.I am drawn to the use of these colors together, the various shades of teal, aqua and turquoise, with red and cream ...and the blackish brown. I held back from filling the space completely, giving the mind and eye places to rest and wander. This will be one of the pieces I plan to submit to Baterbys for the auction which follows the LIVE PAINTING event this Friday.

As the winner of Baterbys Best Artist in Florida I will be painting live at Baterbys in Pointe Orlando this Friday beginning at 3 PM, you are welcome to come by then and enjoy yourself through the evening. Hot Snowflake Entry for Swatch and TTR Trophy

Twitter is a great place to connect and be introduced to opportunities and here's proof. I received a tweet from Swatch saying they liked my art and encouraged me to enter this contest to design a swatch and trophy for The TTR World Snowboard Tour Trophy and the official Swatch Tour Watch.

Swatch Art Rules is an excellent opportunity for an artist to showcase their work and break into the spotlight through the snowboard and art worlds. As one of the most coveted awards in freestyle snowboarding, the TTR Tour trophy is featured throughout the TTR season and is awarded to the tour champions live on stage at the biggest events in the sport. In addition, the matching Swatch Tour Watch with the winning design will be produced and distributed worldwide in 2012/2013.

This year’s installment of the design contest presents a challenge to the artists of the world: submit a graphic design that expresses the themes of Progression and Style. Progression and Style are two elements that run through all aspects of snowboarding and an artist’s interpretation of these themes will make the TTR Trophy and Swatch Tour Watch aesthetically complete.

A jury of snowboard and art experts selects the winning design from all submitted proposals. The top three nominees will be invited to the Swatch Art Rules Night gala event in May 2012 in the Los Angeles area (USA) where the winning design and artist are set to be unveiled to the world. In addition to the portfolio-building exposure, the winner also receives a two-week trip to New York City to soak up all the art and design inspiration of the Big Apple.

Excitement
I knew right away I wanted to use my image "Hot Snowflake", it's that feeling of the sun shinning, snow flying, and swooshing through the air on the slopes.
Trouble
After multiple failed attempts at placing my artwork into the template I cried out on facebook and even with posted tutoring I was still inept at my goal of placing my art into the template with a lack of more photoshop skills.
Solution
I called upon friend and expert Anna McCambride-Thomas who helped me in a pinch. I highly recommend her graphic design services. And I am also a big fan of her fine art, take a peek at Anna's Fine Art.

A new botanical landscape painting - very design like, as I see it as all three, a botanical, a landscape and a design oriented painting. This 12" x 12" acrylic was created using layers of acrylic paint, a resist process, and more layers of acrylic paint, then added drawing with india ink and then sprayed and sealed with varnish. Now what to call this one...

This is an earlier stage in my process as I layer a series.This stage is with paint and resist.

Year of The Dragon

I like symbols and the marks made to create letters and words. I like Sumie brushes, I use them regularly to paint. If you study my work you can often pick out Asian influences.

My mother was born in Boston and our family went there often. We loved to go to Chinatown. I specifically remember Bob Lees where a chopstick using guest taught this ever so curious probably starring child how to use chop sticks. I learned as many of us do via place mats that I am a dragon and years later I learned more specifically that I am a wood dragon.

Tweaking Goals

I've been asked "HOW does one come up with business goals in general"? There's a lot of activities to do before committing to making your goals. There are numerous resources one could search online and in books to do some introspective work to draw to some conclusions. Reading others' goals can also be a good starting point for inspiration. Taking time out to think and ask yourself the tough questions of what you really want. Identify with the image above ..word picture...exposed, bare, reaching out, with a world of color and light.

Here's how my goals have progressed; there's a pattern of reaching for goals, testing waters, accomplishment and sometimes falling short of meeting the goal.

Next I take last years goals and tweak them. Later I will need to discern between goals and what might now have become tasks in this list.

1. Maintain present Galleries; Celebrations Gallery, CT,Gallery 17.92, FL, Juxtapose, NJ, Wolfe Gallery, FL. . Expand to new territory in other states (exhibits, shows, art centers, galleries, museums) . Exhibit at additional Galleries and venues in Florida - presently in 2012 I have 3 exhibitions lined up
2. Create and document 100 new pieces of work.
3. Continue to market work online and in products and increase sales. Continue my positive practices; blogging, social network medias, newsletters, postcards, mailing lists, and attending exhibits. Inspire, share, mentor and give.
4. Prepare EARLY for the Holidays and Promotions
5. Organize and back up data - this includes weekly bookkeeping
6. Maintain present Museum Gift Shops - Orlando Museum Of Art, Maitland Art Center, Florida Museum of Art, Florida Museum for Women Artists gift shop. And apply for more.
7. Make 10 art videos
8. Teach workshops
9. Move studio (sell, simplify, give away a lot of items)

would love to do an artist residency...and possibly work on my degree....

The Depth of Darkness

My art collectors who are in a secret group where they are privileged to see some of my work prior to the rest of the world recently responded to the new work here in the center of this studio shot. Most noted the darkness, a few with apprehension as the darkness is in such contrast to much of my work yet they as a whole remarked on their love of the depth.

Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it. ~ Goethe

Painting is a place where I express my experiences, like a word picture, an emotive, symbolic communication, where I am often at a loss to express the full experience using words. The dark piece above is a response to physical pain, slowness, sickness, hardship, and the glimmer of hope, faith and beauty that shines through like stained glass.

The gestural line drawings on the black paint are created with pastel and paint, and the fresh delicateness brings me joy. I want to call this "Beauty Screams in the Darkness".

The Good Gifters

Perhaps it is the fact that they were Kings themselves who embraced the journey to bestow gifts to a baby King or that the Magi just kept Christmas going with more gifts on 3 Kings Day in my childhood Italian home but year after year the mystery of the Magi brought visions of the glow of the star, the long journey, and creating art of this scene which we celebrate today, Jan 6th. But not this year. I was gaining the gift of empathy for those who are sick or with chronic illness as I endured one health issue after another last month. I am well now, but there's not a new painting of this scene to share. I have wondered how they knew what gifts to bring? You know how some people are really good gifters?

Their purposeful journey brings me back to thinking about the upcoming year and defining my goals. Taking a deep breath in and slowly letting it out.

Coincidence? Or Muse

I checked in at my studio yesterday for the first painting day of the New Year. It was also the first real painting day in quite some time. The holidays usually wipe me out - of time, energy and this season it was my health. Injuring my back at Thanksgiving threw everything off kilter and thankfully it was just a sprain and time heals. I pulled the large canvases out yesterday. Some so large I needed to work on them in the chilly screened in porch next to my studio. The other part of this story is how I was really missing the wild birds (I'd removed the feeders because the squirrels were causing damage to my home). I found yet another squirrel proof feeder, but a month went by and only squirrels and not a single bird. Until yesterday. As I painted outside on the porch a bird landed on top of the feeder and sang. My heart jumped for joy and once again all was right in my world; the sun shinned, a cool breeze blew, the bird sang, music played and I painted.

Reflecting and Pondering

Although I did accomplish quite a bit last year, and many of the goals I had posted came to fruition I left the year feeling slightly unsatisfied due to various opportunities in licensing where communications fizzled..after a vivid beginning came a long gestation with investment of energies that ended with an unresponsive company. Limbo is such a dysfunctional place for me.
I enter 2012 knowing I want success and prosperity and pondering my path to achieving this goal. I believe part of my thing in life is to "connect"; other people together, the dots, ideas, help find ways to meet the needs of others, and make a difference. My mother instilled in me the ability to be a creative problem solver and to be charitable, which she illustrates everyday in her life. I share my successes daily with mentoring and charity. My word picture is like a spiral that ripples outward. I use spirals and curls a lot in my work. Its like the wind or connections of movement. This is how my mind works and how I paint, I connect.

And isn't it interesting that I use the snail as my symbol for time and it is a spiral.....

So like many of you I am watching all the goals pour out in blogs and thinking of just how I should align myself this new year. I am on the horizon of various directions.

Time for My Accountability Response

Accountability is solidified by publicly posting my goals. These were my 2011goals and here's how I did
1. Fine Tune my artistic voice - Yes and I am continuing this as a lifetime process
2. Apply for shows - Yes, however not as many as I dreamed of applying for...I had quite a few shows; Amalgamation, Dresses, Trees for Life Charity Exhibit (Scotland), Red Chair Affair, Edgewater Library, Peace Now (Mexico), Summer Exhibition"The Edmunds Gallery (GB), Maitland Art Center Featured Artist, Painting Live to Satoko Fujii Ma-do at the Timucua White House, Dynamic Duos (CT)

3. Maintain present Galleries; Celebrations Gallery, CT,Gallery 17.92, FL, Juxtapose, NJ, Galeria Tonatazin, CA,Wolfe Gallery, FL. . Expand to new territory in other states (exhibits, shows, art centers, galleries, museums) . Exhibit at additional Galleries and venues in Florida - presently in 2011 I have 4 exhibitions lined up. I have kept up with these, and declined to renew in GT at this time, and may consider it again in the future, so I am looking for representation in CA.
4. Create and document 80 new pieces of work.I did quick count in my database and I totaled 109 originals. .. but I know I am not finished databasing them all
5. Continue to market work online and in products and increase sales. Yes, we all know I marketed..
6. Prepare EARLY for the Holidays and Promotions I did however I still have numerous pieces which I did not finish
7. Organize and back up data - this includes weekly bookkeeping which is one of the best things I did for my business last year.I can't say I was a slacker but I did procrastinate and it hurt me to do so, last year I was much more on top of things, and this upcoming year I am going to try something new thanks to Santa Hubby - using my new ipad.

Baterbys is excited to offer this opportunity of a lifetime to all the artists in Orlando. The aim is to show the communities of Central Florida and the frequenting tourists from around the world that Orlando has a flourishing breed of creative and skillful artists as much as other metropolitan cities.

The winner will be featured alongside Picasso, Dali, Matisse and other highly-acclaimed contemporary artists in Baterbys Art Gallery located in Pointe Orlando. Situated in the heart of International Drive – Orlando’s busiest, tourist-driven thoroughfare – is the 6,000 sq. ft. facility that is home to thousands of artworks from Modern Masters to today’s most sought-after artists like Peter Max, Alfred Gockel, Duaiv and many others, drawing thousands of international and local clients. Other than the fact that Orlando is America’s 3rd most visited tourist destination, the Orange County Convention Center (located across the lifestyle and shopping center Baterbys is situated in, Pointe Orlando) also brings in over a million visitors each year (1,115,817 conference attendees in 2011).

The artist will be selected on the final judging night and exhibit reception on January 13, 2012 wherein the finalists are to bring four of their favorite artworks. Their masterpieces will be judged and scored by the audience present in the gallery, including the artists’ own fan bases, and also a lineup of avid art connoisseurs, esteemed art specialists and some of Baterbys own managers. Their scores will be weighted, allowing the votes of the “art professionals and collectors” to have a more direct impact on the results.

Three winners will be chosen on this night. The third placer will be featured in Baterbys’ art gallery until the first art exhibit in 2012 (February 10); the second prize winner will stay until March 9th, Baterbys “Second Fridays” event for March; and the grand champion (1st prize winner) will win a plaque from the Gallery and will be assimilated into the collection. Baterbys will host a Live Artist Show for both the second and first place winners. They will both have a chance to paint live during the event. Their artworks will join the items slated for Baterbys’ first auction of the year on March 24.

On top of being displayed in the gallery and backed up by the gallery’s strong marketing efforts, the winning artist’s work will also be assimilated in Baterbys’ “travelling shows”. Baterbys hosts art shows and auctions across North America in major cities like Los Angeles, Portland, Dallas, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and Miami amongst many others. The gallery’s vast network of patrons from these various cities are always eager to collect the works of artists Baterbys vouches for.

Baterbys was voted as Orlando’s Best Art Gallery for two consecutive years (2010 and 2011) by thousands of readers of Orlando Magazine and Orlando Style Magazine. The gallery and auction house has also won advertising and marketing awards from the National Auctioneers Association and USA Today, including the Best of Show, for their excellence in the area. Making Good Memories from the Glide Ride On

My mother tells me she remembers being in her crib and hearing conversations spoken by her family.

I don't actually have solid memories of this time period in this picture of me on the Glide Ride, but I look pretty happy!

I do remember this Christmas. I remember pulling at the petals of the daisy belt on that dress. I thought it was neato! I remember making cookies, singing songs, my Dad and Uncle put together and played with us and our new toys, while my Mom prepared food all through the day.

The name Ragamuffin was used endearingly by my mother as we were layered with clothes to keep warm in our old house, with our unkempt Christmas morning hair. This yet another year filled with memories, traditions of putting up the tree, going to church, singing songs, making sure not to break any of my mother's nativity set, dancing, cookie making, creating decorations and Christmas gifts. I'd awake early grab my stocking bring it to my bunk bed and peek..then put it back....

We just finalized our family plans with our extended families, and our grown children

- all celebrating bringing together traditions of several families. And soon begins the making of merriment via food and drink, playing, and dress up, and thank yous and hugs...

However you celebrate the season in your family

I submitted my art for review, Monday I received a phone call notifying me that I'd been selected!! I am one of 6 artists who will have their work in a competition at Baterbys!

They will implement two different kinds of judging, allowing the public to pick their favorite artist and they will have an electoral judging party made up of art connoisseurs.The artists with the majority of points will be awarded theprizes. Each year, on the first Thursday of December, the Morse Museum helps launch the holiday season in Winter Park when it lights up Tiffany windows in Central Park and presents the Bach Festival Choir, Youth Choir, and Brass Ensemble in concert. This December is the 33rd annual celebration of Christmas in the Park. Morse Museum

I will be in here at the lovely Origins of Winter Park displaying several works of fine art on canvas for Gallery Night, November 30th from 6 to 8 pm, 112 S Park Avenue, Winter Park Florida. Origins have asked me to extend my featured gallery night through to December 1st for Christmas in the Park.

Thanksgiving Dinner Disaster

With 15 to 20 guests Tday usually takes our family a few weeks to prepare. Above is the table in progress. I continued to add scrap booking pages as place mats..just because I really liked them and I use clear glass plates. In the evening when we dined the lights gave a delightful glow.

Although I absolutely loved my daughters pecan pie...

and the delish appetizers ...if you recall bacon wrapped dates...mmm

my favorite dish is this Maple-Ginger Roasted Vegetables with Pecans

recipe that we found in Food and Wine magazine back in 2009.

Doesn't it look great!?

well..it DID look great but I placed it in the oven to warm up in that glass dish and POOF! smoke, glass breaking, and the whole thing on the bottom of the oven...the smoke slightly singed the rolls ... so my favorite dish didn't make it, sigh. Thankfully we dinned outside and the slightly smokey kitchen was inside.

And it was all good...not such a big disaster.

Gathering Together

Wordsworth has been a favorite of mine since Mr. Smith's English class in high school at St. Bernard's " All that we behold is full of blessings."

I desire to wake up every morning and not lose this thought and to let it reign throughout the day.

Our hearths and hearts warm up in our homes this season. We pull out our traditions, some wrapped in last years newspapers, some covered in seasoned scars from years of counter top cooking. The scents, the culinary delights and gathering together remind us of memories, to hold dear and to love and cherish in all of these precious moments. We won't cry over stains, and we'll smile at what goes untouched remembering hmm they ate all of that last year..but maybe I forgot the salt?...smiles anyhow, what matters most is the comfort and the joy in giving thanks and gathering together.

Our family menu is pretty fun and diverse! As the hostess of fifteen to twenty, I serve a lot of appetizers as was tradition in my mother's house. I will share a few highlights that we, my daughters and I, are preparing; scallops and dates wrapped in bacon, sweet and sour meatballs, deviled eggs, (Josie's specialty) a clam and cream cheese dip that is baked,and brie on bread toasted then sprinkled with confection sugar (this recipe is from my dear friend and artist Diana).

I serve several beverages but our favorite are snowflakes! This recipe was tweeted to me by one of my art collectors. Frangelico, vodka and cream ....divine snowflake!

We serve the typical dishes for the Thanksgiving feast, and some unique favorites. Over the years we discovered my brother in law enjoys to make a great turkey, accompanied by his wife's potato salad.

My mother in law makes the best flan in this world! Tahra is baking up a multitude of pies and a special pear tart, Elise is stirring up the chocolate fudge, and Josie is making a cupcake wreath amongst many other delicious dishes.

I usually encourage a walk, that my uncle encouraged each thanksgiving when I was young. We will be cheering on our Dolphins as they play football, and after wards we all play Catch Phrase.

I am blessed. And I wish you and yours every blessing - and the ability to behold blessings throughout the day, every day.

I admire both the artwork and the business attitude of my friend Lisa Call. I like many of her Structures pieces, and the Lines series. She has a great blog and as a subscriber I am responding to her questions in her recent blog post . I might add I've never met Lisa in person, and we met on twitter.. another great thing about twitter!

Whatmedium do you prefer to work in and why?

I am presently enjoying thefluidity and diversity of working with acrylic on canvas. I especially like beingable to layer colors. I also like that the paint dries quickly so I can work atwill. I am very pleased that I do not need to use harmful solvents to paint. Ialso like the ability to mix other mediums in with my applied acrylics; Iincorporate pastels, inks, charcoal and pencil.

Haveyou always been an artist?

Yes. I painted in kindergarten in a special red,blue and yellow paint splattered smock sewn by my mother. I crafted and createdin every medium throughout childhood. I took years of oil painting lessons withprofessional artists. I won awards,began selling my art and exhibiting at The Mystic Art Association Gallery as ateen. I have always created art and I continue to do so.

I have had day jobsand a wide range of them. Some of my day jobs might surprise you; teachingmental outpatients, telemarketing, waitress, hostess, manager of hair salon,photographer, receptionist, exhibitions and event coordinator for gallery,marksman, armed guard at a nuclear facility, in house undercover detective,gourmet chef, art tent heat sealer and sales, hair model, talent scout,teaching youths and college art, non- profit arts administrator, fashion buyer,sales for numerous things….and you know what? All of these occupations haveimpacted the art I create.

Whatwas the moment when you first realized you are capable of creating an artcareer for yourself?

Knowing I was an artist was onething but learning how to become capable of an expanding artistic career is alifelong learning experience. Early recognitions and awards affirmed myartistic career path, but the sales as a teenager solidified that I couldpotentially make a living as an artist.

Wheredo you draw your inspiration?

Inspiration connects in my mindvia scents, music, words, film, and always nature. I connect my experiences andform pieces of art, which begin through my response in color, shapes, andlines.

Cover Collaboration for United Arts

I am delighted to share the honor of this collaborative United Arts Report to the Community publication with all of you. Way back in June and July while I was working on dresses, commissions, and taking some great family vacations to the mountains and NYC, the art for this project was in full gear. After a brainstorming session with the lovely Emma Kruch, Communications Manager for United Arts, I created the vision that we discussed using acrylics on canvas.

The image and the plan for the cover took on a few changes

as both sides of the team worked to get it just right.

We played with additions so I painted more on the top and the bottom of the piece.

Emma and the team of design professionals took pieces of the flowers and incorporated them into their logo and carried the cover image in the background through to every single page in the report.

When I went into the office in Maitland Florida to pick up some copies of the report I brought the painting as a gift for Emma, as you can see it here on her office wall.

I just love Happy Endings!

It's that time of year when I judge my past year and prepare for next year. I like to use both a digital calender and a large one I write on to see the big picture on my studio wall.

Sometimes the world feels like it's spinning too fast,

perhaps you have experienced those days or weeks..

One day last week I thought YAY I got my groove back as I was in the midst of being all caught up... then whop I realized I missed a deadline, a very rare occurrence for me, in fact I don't think I've ever missed a ship date.The fail totally bugs me, but one has to move forward and learn from mistakes so I've got to do better at entering important dates into my calendar. That's my first listed goal for 2012.

Elegant and Contemporary Miniature Framed Dresses

For two weeks I have been shopping for these adorable little frames to compliment these small original dresses. These works of art were started as the size of an aceo (artist card editions and originals) which officially are 3 1/"2 by 2 1/2", however even though the frames state they are that very size I had to trim the works of art slightly to fit the frames.

These miniature framed dresses are a delight on their own or as a grouping.

I played with selecting each beautiful decorative frame

just like selecting a pair of shoes to go with ones outfit.

The Award Creations of Arts + Awards for United Arts

I am pleased to share I witnessed continued affirmations of art and its purposes in our lives as I attended Arts + Awards of United Arts. I am honored to have been asked to create the actual awards for the recipients. Above is a video sharing my thoughts, process and a bit about the awards.

Art Affirmations through Grief Work

In my morning prayer meditation I opened to a letter in the pink woman's devotional bible titled "Grief Work" where Mary Jane Worden's letter brought up feelings of empathy of my father's passing a few years ago as she shared the "unexpected waves of pain" she experienced even months after her husbands death. I thought eh this reading doesn't apply too much for me today but I read on and I received a perfectly wrapped gift with words of affirmation in response to my recent feelings of doubt that emerge every once in awhile. Every so often I need to realize one of the many reasons why what I create has value and purpose beyond myself. I read..

"I began to see patterns in my choices and a new principle about life began to take shape in my mind. The principle is this: beauty can bring about healing - rainbows, mountains, woolly lambs, fresh strawberries ...

Here I inserted ART, and more specifically for me, I placed my art..she goes on..

"These places and things were somehow soothing to my soul. I am convinced God has built into all of us, in varying degrees, the capacity for an appreciation of beauty, and has even allowed us the privilege of participating in the creation of beautiful things and beautiful places. I think it may be one way God brings healing to our brokenness, and a way that we can contribute toward bringing wholeness to our fallen world."

I am frequently affirmed by art collectors and fans who tell me how the presence or viewing of my art has enhanced their lives, with uplifting and healing feelings. There are numerous sites that share the healing power of art as one endures grief of all kinds, from loss, sickness, and depression. The healing can be in the experience of the art and also the making of art. I googled some sites to share and this one popped up "Healing Artwork - The Creativity Grief" which embraces creativity in the healing process of grief.

Make it a Quest

Driving around when my kids were young, they'll all tell you, before smart phone maps and gps, we were rarely ever lost, as soon as we didn't know exactly where we were I told them we were on an adventure. October is on the horizon and I am assessing my year, the detours building patience, accomplishments, the bottom line, setbacks, successes and aspirations. While sometimes life places strains on sustaining my business desires; I think I have moved more boxes in the past 3 months than I've moved in my whole life, sometimes it allows one a new perspective. Yesterday I met with another artist who I mentor in art and art business. We both learn tips and share about building our business. Knowing there are many aspects of an art business to juggle our session is diverse yet focused ; online sales, the brick venues, building business, connecting with art collectors, attending art and fund raising events, mentoring and teaching, publishing, packaging, shipping, and always creating more artwork. In conclusion, one of the best ideas is the incentive to work smarter. One of my suggestions as a sole proprietor is to join a group or team where there is support, and promotion inviting potential sales and opportunities. How do you work smarter? What are some of your favorite teams or groups?

Mushrooms

The daily rains and damp weather cause the mushrooms to flourish in Florida. The moisture factor makes them sprout up, seemingly out of nowhere. A few weeks ago I began creating this pair of mushroom paintings. There are layers of paint, resist, and more paint. This process continues until completed. I think they are probably meadow mushrooms..anyone know for sure? well perhaps they are not finished enough for you to tell. I admire people who have learned about the vast varieties of mushrooms with the ability to know which poisonous varieties to avoid. Once while we were vacationing in the mountains a family hopped out of their car with cloth bags all excited about finding mushrooms. They were from another country in Europe where they were accustomed to harvesting them and were so delighted to have found the variety in the local woods.

How a Dragonfire Dress Comes to Life

This dress painting began last year before I was even invited to be a featured artist in the Dress exhibit. There are numerous layers of paint on this canvas, gaining various textures. When I abstractly painted the greens, blues and grays I saw a dragon form in the paint, it truly did not take much to accentuate his presence on the canvas. The finding of forms within the paint is a regular part of my process. Finding images is actually something I have naturally done since I was a child. A few years ago I posted and somewhat expanded the term and use of nephelococcygia in my creative process.

This term is used when people find familiar objects within cloud shapes. At one time or another, humans have looked up to the clouds and imagined shapes resembling familiar objects. The earth's atmosphere and the system of the weather are complex and self-organizing. The sky itself is transient, permanent and fleeting, and transfixed all at the same time. Nephelococcygia was first coined in the play The Birds written in 414 B.C. by the Greek comic poet Aristophanes. Pisthetairos (which can be translated to mean "Mr. Trusting") and Euelpides (which can be translated to mean "Mr. Hopeful") with the help of Tereus, tired of the Earth and Olympus, decide to erect a perfect city between the clouds, to be named Cloud-Cuckoo-Land (Νεφελοκοκκυγία -- Nephelokokkygia). Finding faces, objects and animal images in other things like wood, trees, fabric, and clouds is part of the creativity I utilize in my work. (October 2008)

This canvas sat on my wall for quite some time and all the while I envisioned red as the contrasting color that would be utilized. While preparing for the exhibit in my dress painting filled studio, I suddenly knew I needed to create a red dress behind the dragon. I am very pleased with this final painting "Dragonfire Dress". (20" x 16" gallery wrapped canvas) Presently on exhibition at The Gallery at Avalon Island Orlando Florida in Dresses: objects of art.

A Bigger Closet

The top right Dress Seventeen - Up Up and Away -is destined for its new home before it even made its debut. When I created the 8" x 8" series I used a similar palette in sets of threes. Here I used a similar palette in a grouping of four. I am planning to expand on this palette with some florals and birds. Limited Edition Prints are available for the series in my etsy shop. Bullying Awareness Inspired The Dresses Exhibit

When Donna Dowless invited me to participate in her group exhibit Dresses she shared with me the story of how the phenomenal series of Dresses exhibits she produces and creates artwork for came to be inspired. A friend responded to one of Donna's dress pieces sharing this story of "The Hundred Dresses". Written in 1944 - by Eleanor Estes, illustrated by Louis Slobodkin this book has amazing relevance to the tragic flux of bullying that we are faced with today.

Here is an insightful Review
Every child at one time or another has been teased or mocked by other children, particularly in public schools. Those of us who have witnessed it, suffered it, or may have even done it, will remember the experience as painful, humiliating, and regrettable. The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes is one of the best books I've ever read that deals with this damaging behavior.
Poor Wanda has no friends at school. She sits quietly in the back of the room, wearing the same blue dress every day. When another girl comes to school wearing a beautiful, new dress, Wanda proudly tells all the girls she really has a hundred dresses at home, lined up in her closet. Not a day goes by when the girls don't tease her and ask her about those "supposed" dresses.
Wanda ends up moving away, while the other kids learn the surprising truth about the hundred dresses. This book is simply written, and truly unforgettable. It will put young readers in every one's shoes, from Wanda, to the girls who've done the teasing. This book is a good one to use to teach compassion and empathy to young children.

So yes it's a stunning exhibit that opens tonight -

I responded personally to most questions but perhaps some of you had some similar questions like When Do You Paint?, as it so happened that the day I shared was a non painting day as I had art errands to do, but I paint several days a week, sometimes on and off all day - sometimes 3 or 4 hours.

Roisin - My reaction to seeing it is just thinking Gee I left out a lot of stuff lol - I feel productive and I like the sense of accomplishment. Again I don't just want to be busy for the sake of being busy I want to build my career and work smart.

Square Framing suggestion for a square giclee

On a personal note it never ceases to amaze me how painting changes my paradigm to a positive all is right with me and the world place. I have been absorbed in responsibilities outside of my career and art making, sometimes feeling like "real life" is a thief. Then I take another look at it and realize how important it is to balance and exude gratitude in all things. I've been a bit off lately, dealing with a delay in something I'd been hoping to bring to fruition and changes in my living space. Well it's usually after or at the end of a "slump" or "bump" that I share I hit one. It's cyclical. Cathartic. It's also cathartic to be clearing physical stuff, moving belongings into keep and toss piles. It's a new day! Wishing you the best and Thanks for being part of my world - Robin

Marilyn and Monroe in the Gallery Lounge

Last night we had a private preview opening of Dresses: objects of art at The Gallery at Avalon Island in Orlando Florida. "Marilyn" and "Monroe" look darling in the lounge with black bows. The works of our group of artists are all intermingled so when the crowds attend this Thursday Sept 15th for the opening reception they will explore the gallery and the cafe/lounge to see a multitude of works. The metallic gold, copper and bronze paint of these two pieces is very reflective in photos and looks like white so if in town you will just have to come in to the gallery to see them in person. I already have quite a few favorites in the exhibited works, and I am sure you will too. This is truly quite a stunning exhibition and I am honored to be a part of it. Thank you Donna Dowless for inviting me.

I remind myself always to work smarter, learn from others and from my mistakes. I try to have a positive attitude, a sense of humor and to press on even in adversity. I mentor, teach and share my methods of art and art business. So if you are interested in reading here's a typical day like today. Here's how I spent my time;

I wake up naturally before 6 am turn on the TV for weather and a little news, click it off and go to my studio, turn on computer, let dog out, make coffee, check mail, sales, enjoy time with #earlybirdchat friends on twitter, facebook. Read and have a meditative moment. Check task list and calender. Some of these tasks delegate what I do next, and then I juggle, and multi task. Turn on music. Feed the birds. I take care of orders, packaging, shipping. Respond to emails, tweet, respond to facebook. I research then order supplies online from 2 companies. I design and order some more of my cell phone cases from Case Mate. I add more products to my Etsy shop. Make a bite to eat and play with the dog. Then I prepare and package prints, note cards, and fine art bags and accessories which will be going to the 48th All American Dairy Show with Cow Art and More. I filled out and scanned contracts. More social network media, and sharing and supporting the tribe. Photograph some art and some art and me (like the pic above), upload pictures. By this time there's a hurricane of products, papers, packaging, and scraps around the studio. Heat up some lunch, take care of snail mail, run around with the dog. Make some phone call appointments, clean up the room.Throw in a load of laundry. Do the dishes. Prepare to shop for supplies for 10 commissions and to make new pieces, print out coupons. Deliver items to ship to my art collectors. Go to PO Box and find a check where I believe my art collector has over paid me. Get gas. Go shopping for art supplies, score a good sale, till cashier says oh next week it will be cheaper after I paid. At home let dog out, play in grass. Go into email, contracts and bookkeeping to confirm over payment and communicate with customer via email. Eat a bowl of cereal outside till it rains. Toss clothes in dryer. Back in the studio. More calls, check email and social network media. Made weekend plans, and set up time to deliver art to the gallery for Dresses. Proceeded to database all of the dresses, and look! a perfect light to rephotograph them all outside. So I set that up and half way through I realize the white light setting was wrong and I retake the first few dresses. Load pics to pc, check them. Make scans of small pieces. Make dinner. I create an inventory list and send it to the exhibit and gallery directors. It's 7 pm, but I am still not done. I have various tasks and some resizing and listing to do for my shop. Notice I am almost at 1999 likers, and share I am almost at 2000 and celebrate on twitter with 2003. Then some family and friends time. I stage my art for tomorrows delivery. Then move my laptop to where we watch tv and do a little bit of this and that, blog, social network media, email, and fold laundry.
That's how I do it.

Dress Grouping

The seasons are changing - even here in sunny Florida. I have completed all of my proposed dress paintings for Dresses: objects of art. I really like groupings with squares. I created a series of 6" x 6" dresses on canvases. There are also 8" limited edition giclees of these some have been listed in my etsy shop and I will be adding more. The larger pieces were all varnished this week and I made substantial changes to the dress painting "Carmelita", which I shared here in it's early stages. The finished dresses will be revealed for a private showing prior to the official opening reception.

Pedrero Edgewater Library Exhibit Orange County Florida

This morning I installed my art in the Edgewater Library of Orlando Florida. The Orange County Library System was named Florida Library of the Year for 2010. The exhibit will be on display until the end of October.

It is of interest to me to display my art in public spaces. The art is introduced to some people who might not frequent galleries or museums. People are drawn in to the pieces by curiosity, color and subject matter. I like how art makes people think and feel differently and the aspect of how the works I create stir up storytelling. The narratives that people relate to are usually personal with some are real life experiences while others imagined. I am hoping the library visitors indulge and interact with the art and produce a quiet dialogue.

Upon returning home one day I found this placed aside in my door entry way.

I picked it up, remembering that I met someone on twitter awhile back who said he would send me free art and I'd said ok. I brought it inside to pull it open, then went to grab a knife to slice it open and just as I entered the knife, in the nic of time I saw that the backside of this cardboard had the actually art piece on it.

AND it is soooo cool!!

I just think this piece is rockin'! One of my favorite color combos is this blue and red, and the use of the design with the play on the iconic couple is dynamite. I like the concept of how they each have one eye but two together.

Fashion Designer Dreams

I had no idea I would have such a blast painting these dresses for Dresses: objects of art, but there were clues. I've always loved fashion shows and clothing design. I swoon over haute couture and Project Runway. Before I was born my mother had won a sewing contest for Vogue, she still uses the Singer that she won in that contest. My home and clothes were often homemade growing up. Yet try as I did even when making dresses for my daughters when they were little, sewing with all its tension and re threading the needle left me with little patience. I would buy fabrics just for the love of fabrics and they would sit with good intentions often even cut and ready to sew,as I enjoyed the patterns, pinning them, cutting them,and even handsewing. Although I love fashion, machine sewing was not my area of excellence nor as much fun for me as painting. So one of my many dreams of being a fashion designer was put aside. Now I can live the dream through this series. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I do!

Tranquility

We usually squeeze a lot of activity into our vacations. As a family we enjoyed the Smokey Mountains this summer. My most fun part of this trip was tubing in Cherokee, NC. It was a mixture of tranquility and physical inertia when low waters over the rocks stopped you and you had to carefully walk and try not to slip. I fell a few times, mostly concerned about my hands, my pinkie survived minor damage and my ankle reminds me of the great time we had. Some moments were super speedy in rapids. I am ready to do it again.

Central Florida Arts and Nature Map on TDAT

Ta Da! I say that as I have been steadily encouraged to create this map by one of my dear twitter friends.

She shared the link to They Draw and Travel who hosts this incredible unique map contest. I encourage you to take some time to explore the maps on the site. Oh and I would be delighted if you could leave a comment on my page there. Now back to my map here. Yes I know there are not any roads, but it is still a map with a sense of direction. I started sketching maps of my favorite places, Sedona, Spain, Maui..but I really have done a lot of tourist activities in those places and I thought I'd make a map with places I like here where I live.

Orlando Museum of Art - I went there today, I saw an interesting exhibit "Concordance" by Hasan Elahi and I delivered more of my artsy things for the gift shop .

Blue Bird Bake Shop .. I have had their cupcakes a few times in fact I went there for my Birthday Cupcake ...White chocolate, white frosting...divine.

Maitland Art Center is what I still call it but it has a new name Art and History Museums I have been visiting this place since I moved to Florida. I enjoy the gardens and sculptures in addition to the exhibits. My art is in the gift shop.

I haven't actually done this yet but I want to Paddle Board Orlando. I wonder if it goes by the

Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Garden ...I know when I took the Winter Park Boast Tour it went by the garden.

One of my Favorite NEW Restaurants is in downtown Orlando The Rusty Spoon .

A few years ago I had an exhibit at Dandelion Communitea Cafe and I so enjoy their menu, in fact I have decided to cross promote with them on their new tumblers (if u get one you could win art by me)

Mockingbird Flies

"Mockingbird Flies" is filled with nature, flowers and a striking mockingbird. The true story here is of a mother's love for her child as she comforts the child through the night seeking solace in the song of the mockingbird in the night air. Very subdued in the top right is a house, outside is a mother holding a child in her arms. Hidden behind the ferns on the right are three mockingbird eggs in a nest, more evident in the photos in progress. Below in the various stages of the work in progress you can see the layers of color and nature building until the final piece above. The very first layer of paint is yellow ochre. Beside the painting in this next photo are some notes shared with me by the person who commissioned the painting. I incorporate colors, stories, and subjects using symbolism to depict the story... this one a love story of a mother's endurance through the night, the cry of the mockingbird with it'swhite stripped wings flying over their garden night after night brings a familiar sense of comfort and unity. There is copper and other metal used in the nest representing the art collector who makes wonderful jewelry.

I love to wear these gorgeous Australian Ruby Red earrings by Wellspring Creations the hero of our story who still awakens in the middle of the night, often inspired to create her work, listening to the Mockingbird's song. I am not sure why but ever since the first moment I placed these earrings on I call them my energizing empowering earrings...when I wear them I accomplish a lot and feel great!

Wellspring Creations has been gracious to share her journey, I am thankful.

Reflecting on "Abundant Thanks" a new print in my Etsy Shop

I am one of those types of people who are nourished by creativity and productivity. I have come to realize that there are many who share this similarity. I interact with them in both social media and the "real world". Actually both are very real worlds, the online relationships aren't virtual to me, they are substantial. As we all know one invests time in things and relationships that interest them. I enjoy meeting people and getting to know them via snm. In fact so much that I follow over 13000 people on twitter. Just this week my followers number hit over 12000. What fun! I was thrilled and how rightly so to have @imperfectwomen as my 12000th follower! I had not known of their site until they followed me. I went to their website and blog ImperfectWomen.com , then I "liked" them on facebook. I think you'll like them too! We are already chatting it up on twitter and now we are new friends!

I am filled with abundant thanks for all of these wonderful flourishing relationships. I adore my UWIBs! (Unique Women in Business). I am having fun joining in on many of the Designers twitter chats too! Oh and Alyson Stanfield (Artbiz Coach) has a new book club going, where we are all reading Joan Mitchell: Lady Painter. I started it and love Patricia Albers style of writing!

Last year I met Jenipher via an Etsy local group event. We met in person again when we both qualified for 2011 United Arts Grants. I needed an assistant and she is perfect! Painting Live and Tips

Here's my studio table after returning from the event. Although thoroughly drained, and needing a day to recoup my energy, I had so much fun! I was invited by Benoit Glazer to come back to paint at the Timucua White House again. While sharing about my recent live painting demo as Satoko Fujii Ma - Do (Satoko Fujji pianist link ) performed music, several visual artists shared how uncomfortable they are working live. Early on in my career I was somewhat unsure. I learned that one must cancel out thoughts of oh what would everyone think at every brush stroke. I will say I was nervous yesterday for the first time in awhile, not about making art, but more about not wanting to get paint on the walls or the musicians! I had researched the music and found it would be quite unique, and I was curious about how I might feel painting with them so close to me. I also thought we had some things in common.

This band’s name, like it’s music, has many layers. Ma-do means “window” in Japanese. But “ma” also means “the silence between notes.” Fujii chose the name to show how the music opens to the outside (just like window) and that silence can have more meaning than notes. In an acoustic setting, the group’s absorbing improvisations explore subtle textures and tone colors, using silence and group interaction to build brilliant collages of sound, melody, and rhythm.

The music of Satoko Fujii Ma -Do has quite moments, and different from the dance floor in my studio where I play my eclectic ipod mix, or at an art only demo, is that these musicians deserved the respect of not having me rustling through my paint tubes or the disruptive cellophane wrapper around the charcoal. So sometimes it was awkward for me as I had to adjust my impromptu inspiration and move to something else just to be quiet. Music is quite influential in all of my art pieces, and I sincerely see the influence in the work I created at the event. I was overly thrilled that Satoko gifted me their new CD Heat Wave! Satoko Fujii Ma- Do is off to Montreal, then Chicago, LA, Vancouver...enjoy! (it was videoed will share later)

For artists looking for tips on painting live

Practice in your own space, timing yourself, adjusting the process to meet the needs of the venue or time constraints. (I often work flat in the early stages, and at this event I worked on an easel)
Prepare all of your supplies and work in advance. (for instance I brought 4 water containers and a jug of water so I would not be away from the easel changing water)
Pretend you are in the audience and make a list of questions and answer them. Print it out. Rehearse your answers so it flows.
Don't be afraid to make corrections, your corrections often teaches others.
Smile.

This exhibition will show five works by each of five selected artists. One work by each artist will have something to do with a red chair and be exhibited at the Red Chair Affair. 40% of all sales will benefit the Red Chair Project. My Pretties

The timing and process of creating a painting is different and unique for each creation. This piece "My Pretties" evolved over time. The last update I shared of this piece was back in February, "Poppy Makeover" . Just last week I finished the painting completely, in time to have its first debut in "Amalgamation". I am looking forward to greeting and speaking with our guests tomorrow evening at the opening reception at The Gallery at Avalon Island in downtown Orlando. All of us who installed the exhibition think our guests will be in for quite a treat!

My most recent work "Rhapsody" has been completed to be revealed at Amalgamation!

This piece must be seen in person. I am very pleased with the whimsy here as white rabbits hop..yes see I told you - come see it in person ! We installed our Amalgamation exhibition all day yesterday. We have just a few details to finish up today. The Queen of Hearts Donna Dowless (the official Ambasador of Love in Orlando) said she was drawn to the gallery from the windows and just had to come in and see. She was raving about our show. We think you will too!
